In our workshop in Aveyron, discover how a piece of KOMET ceramic comes to life, from the mould to made-to-measure, right up to your table.
In Aveyron, each piece begins with a precise idea
At KOMET, in our workshop nestling in the heart of Aveyron, each ceramic piece is born of a precise idea. Before the clay even touches the mould, there is a drawing, a search for balance, a gesture sketched out on paper. It all begins with an intention: to create a made-to-measure piece, designed to interact with the dish, the table, the place.
Mould making: precision craftsmanship and freedom of form
In the silence of the workshop, we sculpt our moulds by hand. They give each piece its final shape, while allowing the material the freedom to live. Made from plaster, they are created in several parts to allow them to be removed from the mould without tension. This is a meticulous stage, where technique marries creation.
Casting: when the clay takes shape
Next comes casting. The slip - the liquid clay - is poured into the mould. It is left to adhere to the walls, then the excess is patiently emptied. This is a crucial moment: it's when the piece takes shape. It then dries slowly, still fragile, as if suspended between two states.
Finishing by hand, with precision and care
Once unmoulded, the piece passes through our hands for the finishing touches. Every edge is refined, every line smoothed, every trace carefully cleaned. This hand work, typical of our artisanal approach in Aveyron, gives each object its own personality.
Nothing is left to chance.
Enamelling: revealing the material, playing with light
After an initial firing - known as ‘bisque firing’ - the piece is ready to be enamelled. This is a delicate moment: depending on the desired effect, the glaze is applied by dipping, spraying or brushing. Every gesture counts. This is where the piece begins to tell a story of textures, reflections and light.
The final firing, and the encounter with the table
Fired at over 1000°C, the piece is transformed. The glazes set, the colours appear, the textures are revealed. The opening of the kiln remains a powerful moment: the moment when you discover what the fire has decided to reveal. It's also the beginning of a new life: that of the piece on a table, in a restaurant, at a chef's or a private home.
A tailor-made process, designed for your projects
Each stage can be adapted, reinvented and rethought. At KOMET, we also create made-to-measure pieces, in direct response to the needs of professionals in the restaurant, hotel and interior design industries. A plate designed for a signature dish, a jug in the colour of a location, a personalised series: anything is possible, as long as the exchange guides the creation.
Conclusion: objects crafted with the soul of Aveyron
Our workshop in Aveyron is a place of slow gestures, raw materials and meaningful objects. Each KOMET piece is the fruit of a made-to-measure process, designed to last, to pass on, to embellish a moment. Behind each plate or jug, there are hands, time and the desire to create the right piece.
